July 4th at The Center
It is time once again for our small town, one of a kind July 4th celebration here in the Center of the Universe. The Hanover Arts & Activities Center, sponsor of the event, has many activities to entertain you and start off your patriotic celebration with a bang.
Plan to either participate in or spectate in our nonmotorized walking parade. In addition to our traditional bicycle, basset hound and lawn chair brigades, we have many new parade units this year with dancing, music and even a few new surprises. Quirkiness and small town humor abound. If you wish to be in the parade, line up for the parade at the Henry Clay Elementary School/War Memorial parking lot at 10:15 a.m. on Friday morning, July 4, 2015. The parade steps off at 11:00 a.m. and heads down shady and tree-lined Hanover Avenue and wends its way to end at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center where there will be music, food and old fashioned lawn games.
Following the parade, we will have a rousing patriotic concert and sing a long on the lawn of the Hanover Arts & Activities Center, featuring the Hanover Concert Band. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic lunch or buy delicious food from one of our local food vendors.
The Virginia Blood Services will have their bloodmobile at the Center; visit www.vadonor.com to schedule an appointment to give blood or call (804)213-4170 for more blood drive information. What is more American than apple pie? To enter the Apple Pie Contest and win culinary bragging rights, drop off your homemade apple pies at the Center between 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on July 4th. Winning pies will be auctioned, and prizes will be awarded. Think you have the most Patriotic Pet in the Center of the Universe? If so, show up at the corner of Cox Lane and S. Center Street at 11:45 a.m. on July 4th with your decorated pet in tow. Pucker up for watermelon seed spitting and a host of other fun and free games on the lawn at the Center (500 S. Center Street, Ashland, VA).
The parade route, including suggested parking, is posted on the Center web site, along with information for parade new units, Apple Pie and Pet contest rules and entry forms. Please call 804.798.2728 for details on all of the above activities or email firstname.lastname@example.org
